Over time, however, the pancreas may struggle to keep up with demand. When this happens, blood glucose levels begin to rise, increasing the risk of developing prediabetes and eventually type 2 diabetes.

Importantly, insulin resistance can exist for many years before blood sugar levels become abnormal. This is why many people experience symptoms long before receiving a formal diagnosis.
